When you think of a tent, you most likely envision the small backyard or camping version that requires a web of supportive rods, ropes, and of course stakes, which need to be driven into the ground. When it comes to a professionally installed tent, like the large white tents used for weddings, the supports required reveal a much different picture. While some venues have natural surfaces like grass or dirt, others don’t support the use of stakes for stability. What options are available for securing your wedding tent on any foundation?
Natural Surfaces
When the set-up location for your wedding tent or reception space offers a natural surface like grass or dirt, preparation will involve driving large and sturdy stakes up to 3 feet into the ground. This is the preferred method for securing tents:
- Stakes are driven into the ground using a sledgehammer
- These are easy to position in the most supportive configuration
- Water and utility lines will need to be clearly marked to avoid damage
Asphalt Surfaces
Similar to natural surfaces, it is possible to use stakes to secure a large wedding tent to a porous, asphalt surface.
- Stakes up to 42” long are hammered into the surface
- When the stake is removed with a stake puller, tar plugs are inserted into the holes, completely restoring the surface
Concrete or Stone Surfaces
If the wedding or reception tent will be set up on concrete, preparation requires drilling through the concrete and securing fasteners to the surface.
- Heavy duty concrete drill bits are used to create holes in the concrete for anchors
- Eyebolts are placed into the anchors, and ropes or ratchet lines are attached to them
- The bolts are removed after the event, and the anchors capped with a hexnut
- Typically causes permanent changes to the concrete surface, but these can be reused
When All Else Fails
If traditional methods used for securing your wedding tent to the venue surface are not an option, then it may be possible to use barrels filled with water. This is not the most ideal method for a number of reasons, and successful application depends on a very knowledgeable wedding tent supplier. Challenges may include:
- A less-aesthetically pleasing set up
- Need a water source at the venue
- Requires the ability to move barrels weighing in excess of 5-600lbs.
- Compromised stability if there is not enough friction between the base of the barrel and the surface
- Potential cost of water remediation if the water used is not potable and needs to be cleaned before dumping
